Go for gold with a home that sparkles in the right places, says Gabrielle Fagan

Secretly, I've always admired celebrities and their passion for bling.

They're never afraid to splash the cash and create homes full of in-your-face glitter and sparkle - from gold taps to gilded furniture.

While their rooms may not always ooze taste, they do shriek success and luxury - and it looks like the rest of us are following their lead.

Metallics are one of the hottest interiors trends this year, and whether it's rich gold and bronze or sleek silver, these faux or real finishes are featuring on everything from fabrics to accessories.

"Using metallics in the home is a great way of adding drama and sparkle to a design scheme," says interior designer Nina Campbell.

"Metallic accessories are characteristic of what I call 'unashamed luxury'. But you don't have to spend a fortune, just add small touches, perhaps a vase or a lamp, and create rooms that have a stylish sheen."

All that glitters needn't be gold and mining the high street for precious metals is easy as there's a glorious razzle-dazzle variety of homeware to make your home a shining success.

But unless you've got delusions of grandeur and want your 'des res' to look like a gilded palace worthy of the pages of a glossy magazine, Campbell urges a light touch.

"It's far better to follow the 'less is more' rule so you achieve discreet decadence rather than garish glory."

ON YOUR METAL

Reflect the look on your walls in copper, bronze or pewter tones, or dress windows with silky gold or silver fabrics, advises Annie Deakin, online magazine editor at www.mydeco.com

"Metallic has taken the interiors, fashion and beauty world by storm this season," she says. "If you’re fortunate enough to have walls that are flat and silky smooth, metallic wallpapers will work wonders, giving them ashiny, space-enhancing edge."

INVEST IN GOLD

"Gold is a colour that looks great in all seasons. In summer it reflects the rich glow from the sun and in winter it warms us up by reflecting all the gorgeous light," says Claire Hornby, creative stylist at Barker and Stonehouse. She believes gold works best in cluttered rooms, teamed with over-the-top ornate French detailing and luxurious designs.

To get this look, keep the walls simple in a golden cream shade and reflect this with cream carpets on the floor. "Now add in as much gold as you can. Opt for furniture with a gilt finish and accessories to match for an opulent, over-the-top and always glorious room."

RISE AND SHINE

Give yourself the film star treatment in the bedroom with ornate gilt frame mirrors and furniture, or simply pick up on the style with sophisticated bedding and accessories. "A metallic fabric cushion or bedspread is a great way toadd glamour without needing to completely redecorate your room," says Chrissie Rucker, founder of The White Company.

"Feminine pleats, pintucks, covered buttons and hand quilting add subtle and fuss-free detail. The sheen of glass in lamps and metallic accessories adds a sleek, elegant look."
